The European Union is moving toward tighter rules on children’s access to social media, with the European Commission proposing a ban for children under 13 and stricter controls for teenagers.
The proposed “EU Kids Act” would also place greater responsibility on technology companies to protect young users. Under the proposal, children aged 13 and 14 would be allowed to use restricted accounts with parental supervision, while platforms would have to provide safer designs for users aged 15 to 18. The rules could also cover video-sharing platforms, online games, and AI chatbots, with companies required to strengthen age verification and child-safety measures.
