India has reiterated its rejection of laws that adversely affect the sovereignty of other nations while supporting a United Nations General Assembly resolution demanding an end to the longstanding U.S. embargo against Cuba.
Addressing the assembly prior to the vote, Soumya Nair, a counsellor in India’s Permanent Mission to the UN, stated that New Delhi endorses the global body’s appeal urging all nations to reject laws and regulations with extraterritorial effects that adversely affect the sovereignty of other states and the progress and prosperity of their people.
The results showed 130 nations in favor of the resolution, 25 abstaining and 17 countries, including the U.S. and Israel, voting against. That compared with a tally of 165-7, with 12 abstentions, last year. Several western countries, including Germany and Italy, abstained for the first time in many years.
The UN vote carries political weight, but only the U.S. Congress can lift the Cold War-era embargo. The 193-member UN General Assembly has adopted the resolution annually for more than three decades, except for 2020 during the COVID pandemic.
Speaking in New York, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez accused Washington of seeking to “determine the nation’s destiny” and “seize” its wealth.
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz denied that Cuba was under a blockade and said the plight of the Cuban people is exclusively the fault of this corrupt communist regime.
The tensions between the two nations at the UN escalated ahead of the vote, including shouting matches between Cuban and American representatives in the corridors of the UN, as well as on the floor of the General Assembly on October 27.
