The Government has clarified that E20 petrol supplied by public sector Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) meets the prescribed quality standards.
The clarification comes following a press release issued by the Karnataka Government’s Department of Food, Civil Supplies, Consumer Affairs and Legal Metrology, claiming that petrol sold at certain retail outlets in the state contains between 26 and 31 per cent ethanol.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said E20 petrol supplied by the three OMCs across the country, including Karnataka, conforms to IS 17021, the Bureau of Indian Standards specification for ethanol-blended motor gasoline.
It added that 893 samples from 27 states and Union Territories, including 56 from Karnataka, were tested and found to meet the prescribed specifications. All 56 samples tested in Karnataka also conformed to IS 17021, with ethanol content ranging from 19 to 20 per cent.
Earlier, the three public sector OMCs – Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited – had clarified that E20 petrol supplied by them across the country conforms to the Bureau of Indian Standards specification for ethanol-blended motor gasoline.
