The landfall process of Cyclone Arnab was continuing along the Andhra Pradesh coast early morning on October 28 with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting extremely heavy rainfall in coastal districts.
The Met Department said that the outer spiral band of the “very severe” cyclonic storm has entered the land. The system is likely to continue moving north westwards and cross the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam. The landfall process will continue for the next 2-3 hours.
Under the influence of the cyclone, rain and strong winds are likely to continue even after the landfall process is completed in the area.
The IMD has issued a red alert for coastal areas of the state. Heavy downpour is likely to batter Anakapalli, Visakhapatnam, Kakinada and Konaseema districts.
Meanwhile, the state government has identified 2,199 cyclone shelters and prepared evacuation plans. More than 80,000 people have been evacuated from low-lying areas.
The cyclone is also expected to bring torrential downpours in other states including Odisha, and Chhattisgarh with the IMD issuing a red alert for them for today. Rainfall is also expected in Telangana and Jharkhand where an orange alert is sounded.
