Israel will head to the polls on October 27, with the ruling coalition set for parliamentary elections to be held as scheduled.
Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, has 120 members elected for a four-year term through a system of nationwide proportional representation.
The entire country functions as a single electoral constituency, with voters casting their ballots for a party list rather than individual candidates.
Parliamentary seats are then allocated in proportion to each party’s share of the national vote.
To enter the Knesset, a political party must secure at least 3.25 percent of the national vote.
Ballots cast for parties that fail to cross this threshold are discarded, while the remaining seats are distributed using the Bader-Ofer method, which allocates surplus seats and gives a slight advantage to larger parties.
Israel’s political system is among the world’s most fragmented, with 29 party lists representing a diverse mix of political ideologies, religious groups and ethnic communities, including Likud, the Democrats, ultra-Orthodox parties, religious Zionists, Soviet immigrant parties, Druze representatives and Arab parties.
As no single party has ever won an outright majority in the Knesset, coalition governments are essential, with the president inviting the leader considered most likely to command a parliamentary majority to form the next government.
The October 27 vote will determine the composition of the next parliament and set the stage for coalition negotiations to form Israel’s next government.
