US envoy Steve Witkoff is set to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday, following what a US official described as ‘constructive’ talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Norway, as President Donald Trump said it was time for Ukraine to end the conflict.
According to US officials, Witkoff’s meeting with Putin aims to build on the progress made during the Oslo talks and pave the way for direct three-way negotiations involving Ukraine, Russia and the United States.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the United States have described their talks in Oslo as ‘very productive’.
A US official said Ukraine presented new ideas and proposals during the discussions, which also involved the leaders of Norway and Finland, along with European and NATO representatives.
The official added that the talks covered key elements of a comprehensive peace framework, including security guarantees for Ukraine, a post-war economic plan and a broader European security architecture.
The meeting followed days of heightened tensions between Kyiv and Washington, amid reports of a diesel-supply deal between Trump and Putin and Trump’s call for Zelenskyy to be replaced after Ukraine refused to halt strikes on Russian oil refineries.
