US President Donald Trump on wednesday claimed that the war with Iran will end “immediately” after the upcoming US midterm elections.
Speaking to reporters before departing for a Republican midterm convention in Dallas, Texas, Trump said Tehran is attempting to influence American voters in an effort to secure a more lenient administration in Washington.
Trump also indicated that Washington is in no rush to negotiate, saying recent operations have severely weakened the Iranian state. He added that any eventual diplomatic resolution would extend far beyond conventional nuclear agreements.
Trump directly confirmed US responsibility for recent strikes targeting Iranian maritime assets and oil transport networks in the Gulf, and warned that additional action would follow.
His remarks came after the United States Central Command confirmed that American forces targeted five Iranian tankers connected to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on Tuesday.
The action came in retaliation for repeated missile assaults directed at a US Navy warship over the preceding 48 hours.
