United States President Donald Trump has announced what he called the “most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country” against Iran.
In a post on Truth Social on Wednesday, President Trump said Iran had “failed to take” the opportunity to make a deal and warned that the country would face “economic warfare and isolation on an unprecedented scale”.
Donald Trump also announced sanctions against any country doing business with Iran. He said countries providing financial, business, airport or government support to Iran would face “tremendous economic consequences”.
He listed several activities that he said must stop immediately, including oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries and front companies.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused Washington of escalating sanctions after previous rounds failed to force Tehran into submission. He called the approach a barrier to any negotiated exit from the conflict.
