 — The closed session of the special general convention of the Nepali Congress took place in Bhrikutimandap auditorium on Monday and is extended till Tuesday. The special general convention scheduled for two days began on Sunday. According to the special general convention organizing committee, decisions on leadership and other issues are likely to take place during the closed session on Tuesday. The closed session proposed the dissolution of the existing central executive committee.

On Monday, General Secretary of the Nepali Congress, Gagan Kumar Thapa, presented his proposal on the contemporary political scenario in the country. He shared his vision in transforming the party into a dynamic democratic force that fulfills aspirations of the current generation. He stated that it is a national responsibility to guide the country on the right path through dynamic constitutional enforcement. Thapa highlighted the relevance and necessity of the Special General Convention in the aftermath of the Gen Z protest which is important to reestablish Nepali Congress as a force dedicated to democracy, committed to society, accountable to citizens, and aligned with the people-centric ideologies of NC founders.

The proposal includes a 17-point special resolution aimed at preparing the party for an integrated campaign for National development, curb corruption and implement good governance.  Referring to the policy on pre-electoral alliances endorsed by the party’s Mahasamiti meeting in Godavari, Lalitpur in 2024, the proposal clearly states that the practice of pre-electoral alliances will not be entertained in future periodic elections. In the proposal, Thapa gave the legal provision of ‘no vote,’ and guaranteed voting rights for Nepalis living abroad. He also proposed limiting the term of the Prime Minister to two terms and preventing politicization of state mechanisms

Meanwhile, Acting President of the Nepali Congress, Purna Bahadur Khadka, has urged NC leaders and cadres to move ahead with unity. Issuing a press release when the closed session of the special general convention was ongoing, Khadka requested leaders and cadres not to carry out any activities adversely affecting party unity. He noted that the coming 15th general convention scheduled in May 2026, will change the leadership by making necessary revision in the party’s policy after the HoR election. He requested party ranks to focus on March elections.

On the other hand, Nepali Congress senior leader Shekhar Koirala shared that he was holding continuous discussions and meetings with all sides concerned to protect the party from splitting. In the meeting Vice President Dhan Raj Gurung, Joint General Secretaries Badri Pandey and Jeevan Pariyar, central members Bal Bahadur KC, Dr Minendra Rijal, senior advocates Sher Bahadur KC, Yogendra Adhikari and Upendra Keshari Neupane, among others were present.

Nepali Congress General Secretary duo Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma had called for a special Convention when the establishment faction of Sher Bahadur Deuba had opted for the General Convention in May 2026.
