Union Minister of State Dr L Murugan has resigned from the Union Council of Ministers and the Rajya Sabha, expressing his desire to return to grassroots politics and dedicate himself to strengthening the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Murugan expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the country under his leadership. Announcing his decision on social media platform X, he described his tenure in the Union government as one of the greatest honours of his life.
Recalling his journey from a humble family background to the Union Council of Ministers, Murugan highlighted that his parents worked as daily-wage labourers. He said the opportunity to serve the nation at the highest levels of government was a privilege he deeply valued.
Murugan stated that he now wishes to return to the grassroots, stand alongside party workers and work full-time towards strengthening the BJP’s organisational presence in Tamil Nadu. His decision signals a renewed focus on state-level politics as the party prepares for the next general election.
A senior BJP leader from Tamil Nadu, Murugan previously served as the state president of the party. He joined the Union government in July 2021 and held responsibilities in the Information and Broadcasting, Parliamentary Affairs, Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying portfolios during his ministerial career.
During his tenure, he also served as a member of the Rajya Sabha representing Madhya Pradesh. His political journey has included organisational responsibilities, parliamentary work and participation in the BJP’s efforts to expand its presence in Tamil Nadu.
