U.S. President Donald Trump, along with First Lady Melania Trump, welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping for his three-day state visit to the United States.
The welcome marked the first time in 11 years that a U.S. president has greeted a foreign leader at Joint Base Andrews. The last such reception was for Pope Francis in 2015 during Barack Obama’s presidency.
Talks between Trump and Xi are expected to cover trade, technology, critical minerals and broader U.S.-China relations. Artificial intelligence is also expected to be a central topic.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said they had reached a deal on an extension, underscoring the importance of the visit. Bessent said the deal would extend the truce through January 10. It had been set to expire on November 10.
Additional fanfare during the trip is expected to include a state dinner with tech luminaries, a White House military ceremony featuring jet flyovers, and a visit to the National Archives, where the original Declaration of Independence and Constitution are housed.
