India has secured the return of fugitive drug kingpin Virender Singh Basoya from the UAE.
Announcing the return of the fugitive on social media, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is relentlessly tracking down drug traffickers hiding abroad and destroying their entire ecosystem with a ruthless approach.
He called the development a new milestone in the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards narcotics. He also said that by tracing the criminal through a top-to-bottom and bottom-to-top approach, Indian agencies have once again proven that no matter where drug traffickers hide, they cannot escape the long arm of Indian law.
Basoya has been accused of masterminding an international drug syndicate. Basoya has been brought to Delhi from the UAE. He is accused in a case involving the seizure of drugs worth around ₹13,000 crore. The operation was conducted by the Delhi Police Special Cell.
In June this year, Shah unveiled the government’s Vision Document on Drug Control and the Narcotics Control Bureau Annual Report-2025. The documents were released alongside a three-year national plan aimed at dismantling drug trafficking networks.
More than 40 ministries and departments are part of the plan, which seeks to tackle the narcotics ecosystem through joint efforts in enforcement, intelligence, prevention and rehabilitation.
