Iran insisted Sunday that it would not reopen the Strait of Hormuz until the United States complied with a list of demands, including paying compensation for war damage.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Sunday that an agreement with Oman on the strait was in its “final stages” but repeated that the U.S. must meet other conditions before the strategic waterway is reopened. Araghchi also said Tehran was only “exchanging messages” with the U.S. via intermediaries.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council laid out a list of conditions for reopening the strait, including an end to the war on all fronts, lifting of a U.S. counterblockade of Iranian ports, an end to sanctions, release of frozen assets and compensation for wartime damage.

Those conditions echoed the terms of the June agreement, which included a provision to create a $300 billion reconstruction fund for Iran.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump signaled Sunday that he is prepared to let economic pressure mount against Iran, apparently backing away from ordering more military strikes.

Trump said Sunday that he was “low-keying it” in his approach to Tehran, suggesting he believed he could wait them out economically.

Oman’s Foreign Ministry condemned the repeated attacks, without naming Iran. Oman said, “negotiations regarding navigation arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz are proceeding,” and warned against any actions that might jeopardise the progress.
