Ukrainan President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has proposed a face-to-face meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in a rare open letter to the Russian leader on June 4.
President Zelenskyy proposed that the two leaders should meet to agree an end to more than four years of conflict, warning that Kyiv stood ready to fight on otherwise.
He said that with the United States focused on the conflict in Iran, it would be wrong to simply wait until the conflict in Europe returns to the center of its attention.
The President also said that the path to peace had to start at the frontline and Ukraine stood for a full ceasefire for the duration of the negotiations.
He proposed setting a clear date for a meeting and said several countries had traditionally hosted leaders to resolve issues of war and peace citing Switzerland, Turkey and the Arab nations.
In Moscow, the Kremlin said it had seen President Zelenskyy’s letter and that President Putin would be briefed on it.
