Ukraine will buy 20 new Saab Gripen fighter jets from Sweden, while Stockholm will donate 16 older Gripen C/D aircraft next year.
The announcement was made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson during a joint press conference in Sweden.
The move is aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s air defence amid the ongoing conflict with Russia. Sweden has already provided significant military and civilian aid to Ukraine, while the Gripen jets are considered cost-effective and suitable for wartime operations due to their easy maintenance and ability to operate from dispersed bases.
