TVK chief Vijay has staked a claim to form the next government in Tamil Nadu in a meeting with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar today. His party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which emerged as the single-largest party after the assembly election, needs at least 10 seats to hit the majority mark of 118. The next step is for Vijay to prove his government’s majority in the house.
Earlier, Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar reached Chennai from Kerala this afternoon. Interacting with the media, he said that he had received an email stating that Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which has won 108 constituencies, had sought an appointment with him. The party had also requested two weeks to prove its majority in the letter.
Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar is serving as the Governor of Kerala since January 2025. He took additional charge as the Governor of Tamil Nadu on 12 March 2026.
In another development, a section of the elected MLAs from the AIADMK wants the party leadership to support TVK.
The Congress, which has five MLAs, has also decided to support TVK. The decision was taken after a meeting of the newly elected Assembly members from the Congress party, led by Tamil Nadu in-charge Girish Chodankar. Speaking to the media, Congress MP Karti Chidambaram today said that the Congress party will formally support a government headed by Vijay’s TVK.
A rift is growing between long-time alliance partners DMK and Congress over support for TVK. DMK leader and spokesperson Kanimozhi NVN Somu said that if the Congress has done this, it is a big stab to the DMK. She added that the DMK has stood with the Congress in difficult times.
