A ten-day ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel came into effect on Friday, as US President Donald Trump said he was working to arrange a face-to-face meeting between the leaders of the two countries.
According to the ceasefire text released by the US State Department, once the truce takes effect, the Lebanese government will take steps to prevent Hezbollah and all other non-state armed groups within its territory from carrying out attacks against Israel.
President Trump, in a post on his Truth Social platform, said the two leaders had agreed to the ceasefire to achieve peace between their countries. He later expressed hope that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun would visit the White House within the next four to five days.
While President Trump said Hezbollah was included in the ceasefire, the US State Department stated that the agreement commits Lebanon to dismantle the Iran-backed militant group. Donald Trump also said Lebanon would “take care of Hezbollah” and expressed confidence that the group would adhere to the ceasefire.
