Parliament’s three-day special sitting under the extended Budget Session began today and will continue until April 18.
During the session, the government introduced three key legislations: the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, and the Delimitation Bill, 2026.
A discussion on the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill is currently underway in the Lok Sabha, with members debating its key provisions.
The Bills focus on key constitutional amendments to operationalise the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, passed in 2023 to provide 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies.
After the division of votes, with over 251 AYES and 185 NOES, the Constitution Amendment Bill to enable women’s reservation, Minister of Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced ‘The Delimitation Bill, 2026’ in the House.
Arjun Ram Meghwal also introduced ‘The Delimitation Bill, 2026’. The Bill seeks to provide for the readjustment of the allocation of seats in the House of the People for States and Union Territories.
Union Minister Amit Shah also introduced ‘The Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026’. The Bill proposes amendments to key legislations governing Union Territories, including the Government of Union Territories Act, 1963, the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act, 1991, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019.
Meanwhile in the Rajya Sabha, several Members of Parliament took oath during today’s proceedings.
Following the oath-taking, the House was adjourned and will reconvene at 11:00 AM on April 17.
