Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote a blog  on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, describing the day as “deeply special” and marking the beginning of his 200th birth anniversary celebrations. In the blog , the Prime Minister said Mahatma Phule was one of India’s greatest social reformers and a guiding light for generations. He noted that Phule’s life reflected moral courage, restless enquiry and an unshakable commitment to social good. He highlighted that Phule is remembered not only for the institutions he built and movements he led, but also for the hope, confidence and strength his thoughts continue to inspire across the nation.

Recalling his early life, the Prime Minister said Mahatma Phule was born in Maharashtra in 1827 and rose from modest beginnings. Despite hardships, he remained committed to learning and social service. He described Phule as a curious learner and voracious reader from a young age, quoting his belief that greater questioning leads to greater knowledge.

The Prime Minister emphasised that education was central to Phule’s mission. He noted that Phule believed knowledge should be shared and not restricted, and opened pioneering schools for girls and those excluded from formal education. He quoted Phule’s view that schools should first be opened for girls, as improvements in children through mothers are deeply valuable.

Highlighting present efforts, the Prime Minister said the government has worked over the last decade to make research and innovation key pillars for India’s youth, encouraging questioning, exploration and innovation to drive national progress.

The Prime Minister also noted that Phule had deep understanding of agriculture, healthcare and rural development, and stressed that injustice towards farmers and workers weakens society. He said Phule worked to ensure dignity for the poor, downtrodden and marginalised while promoting social harmony.

Quoting Phule, the Prime Minister said true freedom cannot be achieved until everyone in society is granted equal rights. He highlighted the role of the Satyashodhak Samaj, founded by Phule, as a major social reform movement advocating justice, community service and human dignity, and giving voice to women, youth and rural communities.

The Prime Minister also spoke about Phule’s personal courage, noting that even after suffering a debilitating stroke, he continued to work towards his vision.

He further paid tribute to Savitribai Phule, describing her as one of India’s pioneering women teachers who played a key role in advancing girls’ education. He noted that after Phule’s death, she carried forward his legacy and lost her life while serving plague victims in 1897.

The Prime Minister said India has been blessed by reformers who became agents of change, adding that Mahatma Jyotirao Phule was one such voice who worked for social betterment and refused to accept injustice as fate.
