The United Arab Emirates has signed a cooperation agreement with the United Nations World Food Programme to support emergency humanitarian efforts in Sudan, including food assistance for conflict-affected populations.
Under the agreement, signed between the UAE Aid Agency and the WFP, the UAE will provide a grant of $ 20 million to accelerate emergency food relief and address urgent food security needs, particularly among displaced people and vulnerable communities.
The signing took place in the presence of UAE Aid Agency Chairman Dr Tareq Ahmed Al Ameri.
Dr Al Ameri said the agreement reflects the UAE’s continued commitment to alleviating humanitarian suffering caused by the conflict in Sudan.
He stressed the importance of meeting basic food needs for displaced populations both inside Sudan and in neighbouring host countries, including Chad, South Sudan, Uganda and Ethiopia, and highlighted the shared international responsibility to respond to famine risks and humanitarian crises.
Bashar Al Hammami, head of the WFP partnership office in the UAE, said, “The United Nations World Food Programme expresses its profound gratitude and appreciation to the Government of the United Arab Emirates for its generous contribution of US$20 million, which will support WFP’s life-saving operations in Sudan.”He added that the funding would enable the WFP to reach millions facing acute hunger and hardship.
UAE has provided 4.24 billion dollars in assistance to Sudan over the past decade, including 784 million dollars in humanitarian aid since the outbreak of the civil war. It has also reiterated calls for a humanitarian ceasefire to ensure civilian protection and unimpeded access for aid delivery
