U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he has imposed a 25% tariff on goods from countries that have commercial ties with Iran, as Washington considers its response to the situation in the country.
Trump said on social media that the tariff is “effective immediately,” without specifying what constitutes “doing business” with Iran. “This Order is final and conclusive,” he added, offering no further details.
He also stated that the U.S. may meet Iranian officials and that he has been in contact with Iran’s opposition, while continuing to pressure the country’s leaders, including by threatening military action. The new tariff follows Trump’s warning that the U.S. could intervene militarily if Tehran targeted protesters.
