Along with the rest of the country, Vijay Diwas (Victory Day) was observed this morning at 8:00 a.m. at the War Memorial, Treasury Square, Aizawl, under the leadership of the Chief Minister, Pu Lalduhoma. The occasion was marked by a solemn ceremony to honour and remember the brave soldiers and martyrs who laid down their lives for the nation.
Leading the ceremony, Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma laid a wreath at the War Memorial as a mark of respect to the valiant martyrs. He was followed by Home Minister Pu K. Sapdanga; Lt. Col. Clement Lalhmingthanga (Retd.), MLA and President, MESL; Pu Khilli Ram Meena, Chief Secretary; Pu Sharad Agarwal, Director General of Police, Mizoram; Pu Vanlalmawia, Home Secretary; Padma Shri awardee Hav Lalbiakthanga, President, World War II Veterans Association; and other dignitaries, who also paid floral tributes.
On 16th December, 1971, at the Ramna Race Course (now Suhrawardy Udyan) in Dhaka, Bangladesh, the Chief of the Pakistan Forces, Lt. Gen. Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi, along with 93,000 troops, surrendered to the Allied Forces led by Lt. Gen. Jagjit Singh Aurora of the Indian Army, comprising Indian armed forces and the Mukti Bahini, during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971. This historic victory led to the liberation of East Pakistan, which subsequently became Bangladesh.
In remembrance of this momentous victory, Vijay Diwas is observed every year on 16th December across India and in Bangladesh.
