The leaders of Denmark and Greenland have urged the United States to stop “threatening” Greenland, after U.S. President Donald Trump told media he “absolutely” needed the territory, a day following Washington’s seizure of the Venezuelan leader.
Washington’s military intervention in Venezuela has reignited fears regarding Greenland, which President Trump has repeatedly indicated he wants to annex.
Those concerns were highlighted by Donald Trump’s remarks to The Atlantic and a social media post by Katie Miller, wife of his deputy chief of staff, which depicted Greenland in the colors of the U.S. flag.
President Trump has justified his claim by citing Greenland’s strategic location in the Arctic, stating that incorporating the Danish territory would serve U.S. national security interests.
Despite calls from Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen to stop “threatening” Greenland, Trump doubled down on his assertion that it should become part of the United States.
Late Saturday, Katie Miller shared the contentious image on her X feed, which Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen described as “disrespectful.”
However, Nielsen emphasized that “there is neither reason for panic nor for concern. Our country is not for sale, and our future is not decided by social media posts.
