Veteran actor Nana Patekar has passed away at the age of 75 after suffering a cardiac arrest at his residence in Goa.
According to reports, Patekar was rushed to a nearby hospital after the medical emergency. Doctors reportedly performed CPR for around 45 minutes, but he could not be revived and was declared dead.
Patekar was among the most acclaimed actors in Hindi and Marathi cinema, with a career spanning several decades. He was widely admired for his powerful performances in films such as Parinda, Krantiveer, Ab Tak Chhappan and Welcome.
Throughout his illustrious career, Patekar received several prestigious honours, including three National Film Awards and four Filmfare Awards, besides multiple Maharashtra State Film Awards. In 2013, he was awarded the Padma Shri for his contribution to Indian cinema and the arts.
His association with the Indian Army extended beyond his work on screen. Patekar joined the Territorial Army as a captain in 1988 and underwent military training while preparing for the film Prahaar. He also served with the Maratha Light Infantry during the 1999 Kargil War.
Born in Murud-Janjira in Maharashtra’s Raigad district, Patekar came from a Marathi family. He studied at Mumbai’s Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Art before beginning his journey in theatre and cinema.
Patekar married Neelkanti Patekar in 1978. The couple had two sons, Durvasa and Malhar. Their elder son, Durvasa, died at a young age following an illness.
With his commanding screen presence, memorable performances and decades-long contribution to Indian cinema, Nana Patekar leaves behind a significant legacy in both Hindi and Marathi films.
