U.S. Vice President JD Vance has arrived in Switzerland for peace talks with Iran, as both nations seek a durable end to the war. Tehran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on Saturday declared the Strait of Hormuz closed, though the U.S. military said commercial vessels have continued operating in the waterway.
Pointing to what it described as Israeli actions in Lebanon that violated U.S. ceasefire commitments, the Revolutionary Guards warned that ships would be at risk if they approached the Strait. However, U.S. Central Command reported that 55 merchant vessels transited the strait on Saturday, carrying more than 17 million barrels of oil bound for global markets.
Meanwhile, Lebanon’s Civil Defence said 20 people were killed in Israeli strikes on Saturday, just hours after a truce took effect.
Israel said it was responding to attacks from Hezbollah.A military statement added that Israel remains committed to the ceasefire but will continue to act against any threat to its forces or territory.
