The Election Commission (EC) today announced the schedule for the biennial elections to 24 seats of the Rajya Sabha from ten States. Former Prime Minister H. D. Devegowda, Union Ministers George Kurian and Ravneet Singh are among the Members who are completing their terms next month. Four seats each in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Karnataka, three seats each in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, two seats in Jharkhand, and one seat each in Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram will fall vacant.
According to the Commission, the notification will be issued on the 1st of June, and the polling will be held on the 18th of June. The counting of votes will take place on the same day. The Commission also announced the Rajya Sabha bypoll for one seat each in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. The seats are vacated by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Ajit Pawar and AIADMK MP C V Shanmugam, who were recently elected to the State Assembly. The by-poll will also be held on the 18th of June.
