India’s Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra continued his winning streak this season by claiming the men’s javelin throw title at the 64th Ostrava Golden Spike athletics meet with a best effort of 85.29 metres.
Competing at this prestigious World Athletics Continental Tour Gold event for the first time, the 27-year-old star delivered his winning throw in the third round, holding off a strong field to secure his second international victory in less than a month.
Chopra’s third-attempt mark proved unbeatable across all six rounds. South Africa’s Douw Smit settled for second with 84.12 metres, while Grenadian thrower Anderson Peters took third with 83.63 metres in a tightly fought contest.
The Haryana athlete entered Ostrava fresh from his 88.16m win at the Paris Diamond League on June 20, where he edged out Germany’s Julian Weber. Though short of his season-best, Chopra again demonstrated admirable consistency.
The event began shakily for Chopra with a foul on his first throw and a solid but unspectacular 83.45m on his second. He found his rhythm in the third round, producing the day’s longest throw at 85.29 metres.
His final three attempts fell short of improvement – registering 82.17m, 81.01m, and a deliberate foul on the last attempt, opting out after an early release failed to meet expectations.
