About Board Candidates
School board members should be a certain type of person. They should be enthusiastic about public education and have a desire to enhance educational opportunities for all children in their local community. They should be able to commit the time and effort required to be a member of an elected public board. In addition, they should have extensive business experience and leadership abilities to bring to the board and be able to contribute to the overall strategic planning process.
A board member should be able to draw on substantial business experience. This is a requirement to be able to comprehend complicated accounting and financial processes, multitiered supply chain and a range of strategic M&A deals and risk management and cybersecurity concerns. The ideal board member should possess significant experience in the fast-moving industry of consumer goods or in a similar field with a background in innovation and technology. A board member should have extensive experience in enterprise leadership such as CEO or other senior level executive in a major publicly traded company or in a similar role in the nonprofit sector or the government.
The CEO, independent board chair and nom/gov committee leader must define jointly the qualifications, professional knowledge and experience they’re looking for in a new director candidate. Working with this clarity of intent will ensure that the board has a clear idea of what “great” is for each position and an understanding of how those traits will translate into contributions to the board’s management functions.
