Near 48°C in North, Central India Amid Heatwave

A severe heatwave continues to grip large parts of North and Central India, with temperatures soaring close to 47–48 degrees Celsius in several regions of Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), dry northwesterly winds combined with clear skies have intensified heatwave conditions across the region, with little immediate relief in sight.

Health experts have warned that prolonged exposure to extreme heat can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke, particularly among children, elderly citizens and outdoor workers. Authorities have advised people to avoid direct sunlight between 12 noon and 4 pm, stay hydrated, wear light cotton clothing and remain indoors whenever possible.

With rising temperatures, many cities are witnessing quieter afternoon streets, while demand for electricity and water continues to increase under pressure of the ongoing heat spell. Officials say the heatwave is expected to persist for at least another week, keeping large parts of North India on alert.
