German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad early this morning on a two-day visit.
This is the German Chancellor’s first official visit to India. The visiting dignitary will hold bilateral engagements with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The two leaders will take stock of the progress made in diverse aspects of the India–Germany Strategic Partnership, which completed 25 years last year.

Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz has arrived in Ahmedabad on an official visit. He was warmly received by the Hon’ble Governor of Gujarat, Acharya Devvrat, at the airport.
India and Germany are celebrating 75 years of India–Germany diplomatic ties and 25 years of the India–Germany Strategic Partnership.
Chancellor Merz’s visit and his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi later in the day will further strengthen the India–Germany partnership.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet the German Chancellor in Ahmedabad as part of high-level bilateral engagements between the two countries.
The two leaders will visit the iconic Sabarmati Ashram in the morning. The Ashram, closely associated with Mahatma Gandhi, stands as a symbol of peace, non-violence, and shared global values.
After the Ashram visit, the Prime Minister and the German Chancellor will proceed to the Sabarmati Riverfront to participate in the International Kite Festival. The festival is one of Gujarat’s most prominent cultural events. During this time, Ahmedabad becomes the epicentre of a spectacular celebration as it draws kite flyers from different countries, making it a global cultural event.
