Iran experienced a nationwide internet blackout on Thursday as protests over economic hardships continued across the country. The unrest began with a shutdown at Tehran’s bazaar on December 28, 2025, following a steep plunge in the rial currency to record lows.Since then, demonstrations have spread nationwide amid growing distress over soaring inflation caused by economic mismanagement, Western sanctions, and restrictions on political and social freedoms.

The movement has also reached the education sector, with final exams at Tehran’s major Amir Kabir University postponed for a week.Local media and official reports indicate that at least 21 people, including security personnel, have died since the protests began in late December.Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump warned on Thursday that Washington would take severe action against Iran if its authorities “start killing people,” adding that the U.S. would “hit them very hard.”
